Patagonia - El Calafate, Argentina

December 25 - 28

Days 55 - 58

Our final stop in Patagonia is El Calafate where we spent Christmas. We stay in America del Sur Hostel, just outside town, and sign up for day tours through their reception desk. Our first adventure is kayaking at the base of Perito Moreno Glacier - the most important glacier in Argentina. The weather starts mild but quickly turns and we have to get off the lake as quickly as possible! The next day, we see the cave paintings and have lunch in a cave. While in El Calafate, we visit two incredible museums. Centro de Interpretación Histórica Calafate is a detailed museum of the history of this land from the dinosaurs to the first peoples, the Spanish arrival through the colonial genocide that continues to this day. It is information dense and we leave in the same way as leaving Yad Vashem: in a state of mourning. We also visit the Glaciarium Patagonian Ice Museum - a scientific and historical exhibition of glaciers centering the Perito Moreno Glacier. We recommend both of these museums: must-do’s when in El Calafate.

Our stay in Patagonia came to an end and we boarded a plane. Next stop… Buenos Aires!
